Cornbread [Personal License]

Like Sigi, Cornbread is another model that originated as a practice sketch. Depicting a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse in an extended canter or controlled hand gallop, this handsome gelding is meant for adventure! 

I wanted him to showcase what gaited horses do best, but are often overlooked for: endurance. If you've ever been on a trail ride with someone on a gaited horse, you'd know they'll run (or, gait) circles around your standard horse. 12 hour ride? They hardly noticed.

Cornbread depicts that spirit for adventure that all gaited breeds have, with his ears perked, eyes attentive to the trail ahead, and hooves firmly planted in the ground - yet, he simultaneously seems to float above it.

And of course I can't sculpt a Kentucky breed without naming it after one of my favorite foods! Papaw normally left the cooking to Mamaw or Dad, but cornbread was the one thing I remember him cooking, and it was always a treat. Whether we were having Dad's award-winning chili, or his overlooked and incredibly underrated bean soup, you could be sure Papaw had a skillet of fresh cornbread ready and the butter on standby. I felt it was a perfect name for what I would like to think is an appetizer of his own. Who knows? There may be another Appalachian entrée to follow.

Cornbread was sculpted with the vision of a horse running uphill in mind. I intentionally kept the incline shallow, so he can stand without a base. This makes him perfect for standard shelf display, but also suitable for performance and diorama scenes!
